Commissioned by the Medici family, the Florence Cathedral was intended to be a symbol of the power and wealth of Tuscany. 

Incredibly, the cathedral took over 140 years to fully complete. The result was the world's largest church, able to accommodate 30,000 worshippers as well as the world's largest dome (designed by Filippo Brunelleschi), which remains the largest brick dome ever constructed.
