The Segovia Aqueduct is a true marvel of Roman engineering and one of the top attractions in this historic city in Castile and León, just a few miles (around 60 km) from Madrid.

History

This UNESCO World Heritage Site was likely built in the 1st century AD. It stretches for about 9 miles (15 km), carrying water from nearby mountains into the city. Its most iconic feature is the urban stretch, featuring 167 arches, both single and double. The structure reaches a height of up to 93.5 feet (28.5 meters) — a truly awe-inspiring sight!

The legend of the Segovia Aqueduct

According to local legend, the aqueduct wasn’t built by the Romans, but by the devil himself. Tired of hauling water every day, a young woman is said to have struck a deal with the demon to build it for her. But thanks to her prayers, the devil failed to finish it in time, which supposedly explains its slightly 'unfinished' look, despite its excellent preservation.
